KUALA LUMPUR: The newly launched Kampung Kerinchi Landmark stands as a symbol of ongoing efforts to preserve the name, history, and identity of the area, said Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil today.

The initiative, he noted, was a collaboration between Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), the Kerinchi Descendants Association, and the Persatuan Tiga Luar.

In addition to honoring local history, the project forms part of a long-term plan to strengthen Kampung Kerinchi’s identity through planned development, gazettement of the area, and special programs for local residents.

“First, we aim to build another landmark at one more entry point to Kampung Kerinchi.

“Second, I plan to gazette this area as Kampung Kerinchi. Discussions with DBKL have been ongoing for several years but were delayed due to the pandemic and other factors. We will now resume these talks,” he told reporters after officiating the landmark.

Fahmi also revealed that for future development projects, including affordable housing such as Residensi Wilayah and Residensi Madani, there should be a policy ensuring that 50% to 60% of buyers are prioritized from among local residents.

He said many members of the Kerinchi Descendants Association now live outside the area but hopes that the younger generation will be able to own homes in Kampung Kerinchi.

Previously, his office had worked with companies including Touch ’n Go Digital to expose Kampung Kerinchi youth to opportunities through activities such as internships and open days.

“These efforts are not just about ensuring residents remain physically present in the area but also about giving them the chance to see and experience firsthand the operations of major companies based here,” he added.
