KUALA SELANGOR: Rainfall of up to 103 millimetres (mm) yesterday afternoon is believed to have caused flooding in Bandar Puncak Alam, Ijok and surrounding areas.
The highest rainfall was recorded at the Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Puncak Alam campus, resulting in flash floods within the university grounds.
Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said that based on reports from the state Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID), overflowing water from the area also flowed into nearby locations, including Hillpark and Taman Seri Alam in Saujana Utama.
“Yesterday, more than 100mm of rainfall was estimated to have fallen, and I am looking for solutions to determine how we should handle such heavy rainfall if it happens again, because the lower-lying area (Hillpark) receives overflowing water from this area (UiTM Puncak Alam).
“Puncak Alam experienced two flooding incidents on November 4 (the day before yesterday) and November 5 (yesterday). Water from the Petaling district also flowed through Sungai Subang, affecting Kampung Melayu Subang and Merbau Sempak before eventually reaching Saujana Aman and several other areas,” he told reporters here today.
Earlier, Amirudin, accompanied by representatives from several agencies and the management of UiTM Puncak Alam, inspected the flash flood-affected areas that went viral on social media yesterday.
He explained that flooding also occurred around Ijok following the overflow of Sungai Buloh, where water levels had yet to subside, forcing more than 700 residents to evacuate to temporary evacuation centres (PPS).
Amirudin said the flooding in the area was also caused by vandalism that damaged a river embankment at Batu 7, Ijok, triggering floods in Parit Mahang, Bukit Kuching and Bukit Hijau in Jeram.
Meanwhile, commenting on land-clearing activities at the Bukit Cherakah Forest Reserve, he denied that the activities were responsible for flooding in several areas, including UiTM Puncak Alam, Sungai Buloh, Saujana Aman and Ijok.
“Activities at Bukit Cherakah may have an impact on Puncak Alam. However, there was no flooding in that area (Bukit Cherakah), Alhamdulillah. The highest rainfall was recorded here (UiTM Puncak Alam).
“Nevertheless, I have requested a review of all approvals granted, including requirements for developers to construct temporary water retention ponds. We do not want them to be negligent, as incomplete works could potentially lead to collapses,” he explained.
