Sri Lankan authorities are working to restore electricity supply following a nationwide outage today, according to an announcement by the state-owned power generation and distribution company, Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB), as reported by Xinhua.

According to CEB, the outage was caused by an emergency at the Panadura grid substation in the country’s Western Province.

Local media, citing Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody, reported that the incident is believed to have been caused by a group of monkeys entering the substation and causing damage.

Meanwhile, the National Water Supply and Drainage Board has urged the public to use water sparingly until power is fully restored.

Sri Lanka has previously experienced several nationwide power outages due to issues at substations.
