Terrorists opened fire on the car that an Iranian embassy worker was in in Damascus, Syria, killing him. A spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry blasted the killing.

Esmaeil Baghaei told the people of Iran and Seyed Davoud Bitaraf’s family on Saturday that he was sorry for his death, which was caused by “terrorist elements” on December 15.

The ambassador vehemently denounced the terrorist attack and announced the discovery, identification, and shipment of Bitaraf’s body to Iran in recent days.

Baghaei also told Syria’s new temporary government that it was their job to find the criminals and punish them.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is taking the matter very seriously and is working on it through the right diplomatic and international channels,” he said.

At a weekly press conference in Tehran on Monday, Baghaei said that reopening the Iranian embassy in Syria is “high on the agenda.” He also stated that the diplomatic mission will resume operations as soon as the “necessary conditions” are satisfied.

The embassy in Damascus needs to complete certain tasks before it can reopen. The most important thing is to make sure that the embassy and its staff are safe and secure,” the Iranian diplomat said.

He didn’t say when the goal would be reached, but he did say that Iran would work towards it “as soon as the necessary conditions are met.”

A group of militants led by Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) broke into and sacked the Iranian embassy in Damascus after President Bashar al-Assad’s government fell on December 8.
