Teresa’s statement on halal certification does not reflect PH’s position, says Anwar
SEREMBAN: The statement by Seputeh Member of Parliament, Teresa Kok, regarding halal certification does not represent the position of Pakatan Harapan (PH), said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
According to Berita Harian, he emphasized that there was no need for Teresa to act in such a manner and described the remarks of the DAP Vice Chairman as only exacerbating the situation.
Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, made these comments at a press conference after inaugurating the Seremban (Southbound) Rest and Recreation Area (R&R) today.
Previously, Teresa had claimed that the government’s proposal to require restaurants and food companies that do not serve pork and alcohol to obtain halal certification could add burdens to businesses, including Malay restaurant operators.
Teresa also alleged that this move contradicts the spirit of cultural diversity and might make Malaysia a subject of ridicule abroad.
Her statement has been criticized by various parties, including UMNO leaders, the opposition, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) such as the Malay Chamber of Commerce Malaysia.
