Student Seriously Injured After Fall from School Building, Cites Academic Pressure

KULIM: A 13-year-old male student was seriously injured after he was believed to have fallen from the third floor of a secondary school building in the district on Sunday.

Kulim District Police Chief Superintendent Syamsul Sinring said the incident occurred at about 3.40pm during a school break.

He said police received a report from a 48-year-old male teacher regarding the discovery of the student lying on the ground near the staircase of Block E at the school.

“The complainant then went to the location and found the victim still conscious and able to speak before he was taken to Kulim Hospital for treatment.

“During a police interview, the victim said he had jumped from the third floor of the school building because he was experiencing academic-related stress,” he said here today.

Syamsul said the student claimed that he frequently compared his academic performance with that of his 16-year-old sister, who is currently in Form Four at the same school.

“According to the victim, examinations will take place next week and he was worried that he would not be able to meet his parents’ expectations,” he said.

Syamsul said investigations also found that a female student had seen an Instagram Story posted by the victim a day before the incident referring to stress related to his studies and family, but the post had since been deleted.
