Single Mother Jailed One Day, Fined RM900 for Skincare Theft in Melaka

MELAKA, Feb 25: A 31-year-old single mother has been sentenced to one day in jail and fined RM900 by the Magistrate’s Court in Ayer Keroh for stealing skincare products from a retail outlet in Batu Berendam.

Magistrate Uthman Abd Ghani imposed the sentence after the accused, Joyleen Low Mei Ling, pleaded guilty to the charge when it was read in court on Wednesday.

According to the charge, Joyleen was accused of stealing various skincare products from a health and beauty store at around 5.30pm on Feb 4. The items, which were kept within the store premises as stock, were reported to belong to another individual.

The court was also informed that repeat offenders could face heavier penalties, including whipping, under the law.

Earlier, Deputy Public Prosecutor Hanis Aliah Ahmad Kamarulnajuib urged the court to impose an appropriate sentence to serve as a deterrent.

However, defense lawyer Goh Chin Han appealed for leniency, stating that his client is a single mother with four young children aged between four and eight years old.
