BACHOK: A single mother was moved to tears after her son’s dream of pursuing his studies at Universiti Malaya (UM), which had nearly been dashed due to financial hardship, finally became a reality.

Muhammad Shah Putra Che Awang, 19, was able to register at the university after receiving assistance from various parties who stepped forward to ease his family’s financial burden.

The achievement was particularly meaningful for his mother, Zubaidah Muhammad Yusof, 51, who had previously been at a loss over how to raise enough money to cover Muhammad Shah Putra’s education expenses.

Zubaidah expressed her gratitude to everyone who helped make her son’s dream a reality, particularly Yayasan Raja Shamri.

She hoped Muhammad Shah Putra would make the most of the opportunity by studying hard to achieve success and build a better future.

“Seeing my son [Muhammad Shah Putra] successfully register at UM is a huge relief for me. My income as a shop assistant is not enough to pay his tuition fees.

“I also have two other children who are still in school, besides having to pay the house rent,” she told Utusan Malaysia.

Earlier, the newspaper reported that the dream of the outstanding student, who achieved a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.0 at UM’s Centre for Foundation Studies in Science, to continue his education had nearly been derailed because his family did not have sufficient funds to cover the costs.

However, Muhammad Shah Putra refused to give up and borrowed money from his aunt to pay the RM500 initial fee so he could pursue a degree in electrical engineering at UM.
