Seven Injured as Express Bus Crashes Into Rear of Trailer

BANDAR BAHARU: Seven individuals, including a second driver of an express bus, were injured after the bus they were travelling in crashed into the rear of a trailer at Kilometer (KM) 169.2 of the North-South Expressway southbound, at around 1 am today.

Bandar Baharu District Police Chief Superintendent Mohamad Sani Mat Ali said the bus, which was carrying nine passengers, was travelling from Alor Setar heading to Kuala Lumpur.

He said the accident is believed to have occurred when the bus driver failed to control the vehicle, before crashing into the rear of a trailer lorry that was changing lanes from the slow lane to the overtaking lane.

“The trailer lorry was carrying a load of iron pipes and was travelling from Butterworth, Penang heading to Shah Alam, Selangor,” he said in a statement today.

Mohamad Sani said the bus driver did not sustain any injuries, while the second driver of the bus sustained injuries to his nose and was sent to Seberang Jaya Hospital, Penang for treatment.

“Six bus passengers who sustained minor injuries were treated at Sungai Bakap Hospital, while three other passengers did not sustain any injuries.

“Urine screening tests found that the trailer lorry driver and the bus driver tested negative for drugs,” he said.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
