Search and Rescue operation for Masjid India sinkhole victim suspended
KUALA LUMPUR: The search and rescue (SAR) operation for the victim of the sinkhole incident at Masjid India was suspended today due to several factors, according to the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories), Dr. Zaliha Mustafa.
According to the Wilayahku portal, Dr. Zaliha stated that one reason for the suspension was the safety of the rescue personnel involved in the operation.
“The SAR operation cannot continue due to safety concerns. The safety and health of the team members going down to search for the victim are at risk.
“There is also the risk of strong currents that could endanger the safety of the personnel conducting the search,” she said at a press conference at the incident site.
Dr. Zaliha mentioned that the decision was made after consulting experts.
She noted that other factors, including the safety of the area and public safety for visitors, were also considered.
“The general safety of visitors on Jalan Masjid India was also taken into account,” she said.
Meanwhile, Dr. Zaliha stated that the next phase will be handed over to the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) to determine further actions.
She added that the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) would carry out several tasks, including utility mapping.
She explained that utility mapping will be conducted to study the soil structure across Kuala Lumpur.
“Following that, there will be engagement to assist local traders here.
“I urge the public to obtain accurate information from the authorities,” she said.
Dr. Zaliha also emphasized that Kuala Lumpur remains a safe area and that geological experts will provide specific updates related to the city’s structure.
Previously, media reported the sinkhole incident on August 23, which caused a woman named Vijayaletchumy, 48, from Kuppam, Andhra Pradesh, India, to go missing.
The victim was reported to have fallen into an eight-meter-deep hole, with the search and rescue operation entering its ninth day.
