RIYADH: Saudi Deputy Foreign Minister Waleed Elkhereiji has called on the international community to bolster efforts in supporting Somalia’s security, development, and stability during a high-level meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Contact Group for Somalia, held on Monday in Doha, Qatar.

According to the Saudi Press Agency, Elkhereiji emphasized the urgent need for expanded international cooperation to ensure long-term peace and progress in Somalia. He noted that sustainable development and infrastructure projects, especially those aligned with Somali government priorities and its newly discovered natural resources, are key to the country’s future.

“The Kingdom continues to provide relief and humanitarian aid through KSrelief,” Elkhereiji stated, “reflecting its commitment to supporting the Somali people and advancing relief and development efforts that promote stability and reduce human suffering.”

Elkhereiji reaffirmed Saudi Arabia’s support for the reconciliation talks between Somalia and Ethiopia, currently underway in Turkiye. He described the dialogue as a “first step” toward regional peace and a future defined by stability, cooperation, and shared development.

He also strongly condemned all forms of violence and attacks that threaten Somalia’s national unity, calling on OIC member states and the wider global community to intensify efforts to counter extremism.

“Extremism poses a significant threat to national security, peaceful coexistence, and sustainable development,” he warned.

Elkhereiji praised Somalia for recently securing a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for 2025–2026, calling it a landmark diplomatic achievement. He said the appointment reflects the growing confidence of the international community in Somalia’s ability to contribute to global peace and stability.

The meeting in Doha brought together key OIC members to discuss strategies for supporting Somalia’s transition toward security and prosperity, amid ongoing political, economic, and security challenges in the Horn of Africa.

Saudi Arabia remains a key partner in humanitarian and development initiatives across the region and continues to use its diplomatic influence to promote dialogue and stability through multilateral platforms like the OIC.
