KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 18 (VoM):Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has welcomed the decree issued by the Sultan of Selangor regarding the development of Kampung Baru, stressing that any redevelopment plans will not compromise the rights and interests of the area’s residents.

Anwar said the government remains committed to balancing modernization with heritage preservation, noting that Kampung Baru holds significant cultural and historical value for the Malay community in the heart of the capital.

“The government fully respects His Royal Highness’ decree. We assure that any initiative in Kampung Baru will prioritize the welfare, rights, and voices of its residents. Development cannot come at the cost of displacing or marginalizing the people who have lived there for generations,” he said in a statement today.

He added that redevelopment discussions will involve close engagement with stakeholders, including the Selangor royal institution, community leaders, and residents, to ensure transparency and mutual agreement.

Kampung Baru, one of Kuala Lumpur’s oldest Malay settlements, has long been the subject of redevelopment debates due to its strategic location and rich heritage. Previous proposals have often faced resistance from residents concerned about losing ownership and identity.

Anwar reiterated that the government’s approach will be consultative and inclusive, aiming for a solution that safeguards tradition while unlocking economic opportunities.

“The vision is not only about physical transformation but also about empowering the community, preserving heritage, and creating a modern environment that residents can proudly call home,” he said.
