PM Urges Selangor to Pause or Relocate Controversial Centralised Pig Farm Project

BANGI, Jan 23: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called for the proposed centralized pig farming project in Bukit Tagar, Selangor, to be temporarily halted or relocated to a more suitable site amid growing concern among local residents.

Anwar said the issue was discussed during the Cabinet meeting he chaired on Friday and stressed that public unease over the project must be taken seriously. He added that he would raise the matter with Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari to seek the best possible solution.

“I will discuss this with the Mentri Besar and suggest that the project be put on hold first or relocated to a more suitable area, provided the technology used is fully assured,” Anwar told reporters after Friday prayers in Bandar Baru Bangi.

The Prime Minister said that even if the project employs advanced farming technology, it should not proceed if it causes anxiety among nearby communities.

“Even with the best technology, if it creates concern in the surrounding area, it should not be allowed to move forward,” he said.

Although the matter falls under the jurisdiction of the Selangor state government, Anwar said the federal government is concerned due to the level of public reaction the project has generated.

“This is not a minor issue and cannot be treated as something that can be resolved lightly,” he added.

Earlier, Amirudin said the state government has yet to identify an alternative location to replace Bukit Tagar as the proposed site for the relocation of Selangor’s centralized pig farming operations. However, he said the government remains open to discussions with all stakeholders to ensure a more organized and comprehensive livestock farming system.

The issue has also drawn the attention of the Selangor palace. On Jan 10, the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, expressed disappointment and disagreement with the state government’s plan to allow temporary pig farming operations in Tanjong Sepat, Kuala Langat, beginning this year before relocating them to Bukit Tagar in 2030.

His Royal Highness said the palace was particularly opposed to the plan due to concerns over the introduction of large-scale, export-oriented pig farming operations in the state.
