BACHOK: More than 200 family members, villagers and friends attended the funeral of one of the victims of a three-vehicle crash in Gerik, Perak, tonight.

The remains of Mohamad Hafiz Daniel Nik Hairey, 19, were laid to rest at the Kampung Tok Jawa Muslim Cemetery in Budi here at 10.45pm.

Earlier, funeral prayers were performed at his home before villagers and friends carried his remains on foot for about 200 metres from the house to the cemetery.

The victim’s father, Nik Hairey Nik Rahim, 42, said the last time he saw his son was on the night before Hafiz left for Gerik, Perak, at 4am on Sunday.

He said Hafiz had told the family that he was travelling to Gerik with a friend before they later received news that the crash had claimed the life of his eldest son.

“On Sunday night before he left for Gerik, my son told his mother that he had some work in Perak and was going there with his friend, but he did not say what the matter was.

“Then, that evening, we received news of his death at about 6pm,” he said when met at the Kampung Tok Jawa Muslim Cemetery in Budi, Tawang, here tonight.

Nik Hairey said his son had not shown any unusual changes or signs that he would be leaving the family for good.

He described Hafiz as a cheerful person with many friends, as reflected by the hundreds of people who attended his funeral.

Hafiz, who sold ayam gepuk rice at night markets, had earlier received funeral prayers at Taiping Hospital in Perak before his remains arrived at the family home in Kampung Tok Jawa at 7pm.

He was the eldest of four children of Nik Hairey and his wife, Norazira Mohd Nasir, 41. His three younger siblings are aged 15, 10 and four.

The media previously reported that four people, including a mother and a young girl, were killed in a crash involving a Perodua Axia, Proton Persona and a lorry at Kilometre 38.5 of the Gerik-Jeli East-West Highway (JRTB) in Perak at 12.50pm on Sunday.

The crash claimed the lives of Mohamad Hafiz Daniel, his friend Al Zubair Deraman, 31, and two passengers, Tuan Syazrin Tuan Mud, 40, and her three-year-old daughter Safiyya Haura Mohamad Sanuzi.

Another of Tuan Syazrin’s children, Mohamad Shiraz Hammani Abdul Fattah, 9, was seriously injured.
