IPOH, Feb 9: Residents in Ipoh and surrounding districts were startled by another unexplained loud boom late Sunday night, with authorities confirming that no seismic activity was detected.

The Perak Minerals and Geoscience Department (JMG) said it has not received any official complaints regarding the incident, and initial checks found no evidence of an earthquake or ground tremor.

JMG director Nizarulikram Abdul Rahim said the department also sought verification from the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), which confirmed that its earthquake detection systems did not record any tremors.

“MetMalaysia informed us that their seismographs and monitoring equipment did not detect any seismic activity yesterday or today. At this point, that is all the information available,” he said in a brief statement on Monday.

The loud sound was reportedly heard at around 11.50pm on Sunday and again in the early hours of Monday. Residents in Tapah, Kampar, and as far as Teluk Intan also reported hearing the noise, causing concern and confusion.

Similar unexplained booms have been reported in the region in the past, including incidents in June last year and earlier cases in 2012, 2018, and 2024. In previous investigations, authorities ruled out quarry blasts, military aircraft sonic booms, and bomb-related activities as possible causes.

The source of the mysterious sound remains unknown, and authorities have yet to determine what triggered the latest incident.
