AMPANG, Dec 4: Police have arrested a Myanmar woman for allegedly stealing cash, clothing, and a mobile phone from a local woman who had offered her temporary shelter in Taman Permai Jaya.
According to Ampang Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Khairul Anuar Khalid, the incident came to light after a 29-year-old woman lodged a police report upon discovering her belongings missing on Nov 28. The victim was alerted by her daughter at around 1.40pm.
Police said the victim had known the suspect for about three months and allowed her to stay at the house out of sympathy, as the woman had no place to live.
“While the victim was away, the suspect allegedly entered the master bedroom and escaped with a mobile phone, a suitcase filled with clothing, and RM4,500 in cash,” ACP Khairul Anuar said in a statement.
Following investigations, officers from the Ampang Jaya Criminal Investigation Division arrested the suspect on Dec 1 at around 11.30pm in Taman Nirwana.
Police also seized several items, including a mobile phone, clothing, and a suitcase believed to be linked to the theft.
The suspect has been remanded for four days until Dec 5 to assist with further investigations.
The case is being investigated under Section 380 of the Penal Code for theft in a dwelling, an offense punishable by up to 10 years in prison, a fine, or both upon conviction.
