Man Accused of Attempting to Assassinate Trump Allowed to Represent Himself in Court

FORT PIERCE, FL – July 25 (Voice of Malaysia): Ryan Routh, the man charged with attempting to assassinate former President Donald Trump in South Florida last year, has been granted permission to represent himself in his upcoming federal trial, despite objections from his court-appointed defense attorneys and strong warnings from the presiding judge.

U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon approved Routh’s request Thursday, allowing him to act as his own attorney during the September trial. Cannon, however, ordered that his current legal team remain on standby in case he requires assistance.

“I strongly advise against it,” Judge Cannon reportedly told Routh, cautioning him about the complexity of the case. Routh, who said he completed two years of college after earning his GED, insisted he understood the risks and was prepared to proceed.

Federal prosecutors are asking the court to block Routh from introducing what they call “irrelevant and prejudicial evidence,” including his personal writings and attempts to portray himself as morally superior to Trump.

“As the Court knows, Routh has been very explicit in his desire to turn this trial into a circus where his supposed good character is weighed against the President’s,” prosecutors wrote in a motion scheduled for a hearing Friday.

Routh, 59, is a former construction worker from North Carolina who moved to Hawaii and fashioned himself as a “mercenary leader.” According to witnesses, Routh frequently boasted about his plans to join or influence conflicts around the globe, including efforts to recruit fighters for Ukraine early in the war against Russia.

His criminal history includes a 2002 standoff with law enforcement in Greensboro, North Carolina, where he was found with a fully automatic machine gun and a makeshift explosive. In 2010, authorities discovered over 100 stolen items inside a warehouse he owned. Despite the serious nature of these offenses, Routh previously received probation or suspended sentences.

The assassination attempt occurred in September 2024, while Trump, then a GOP presidential candidate, was golfing at his West Palm Beach club. According to the U.S. Secret Service, agents noticed the muzzle of an AK-style rifle protruding from shrubbery approximately 400 yards from Trump’s location.

An agent fired at the suspect, causing Routh to flee in an SUV, leaving behind the weapon, two backpacks, a scope, and a GoPro camera. Law enforcement later intercepted and arrested him in a neighboring county. Trump was not harmed in the incident.

Routh now faces five federal felony charges, including:

  • Attempted assassination of a major presidential candidate

  • Assaulting a federal officer

  • Possession of a firearm to carry out a violent crime

  • Felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition

  • Possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number

The case is being overseen by Judge Aileen Cannon, a former federal prosecutor appointed by Trump in 2020. Cannon previously presided over the classified documents case involving Trump, where she ruled in favor of Trump’s legal team, pausing what had been considered one of the most serious legal threats to the former president.

Routh’s alleged assassination attempt came just nine weeks after another failed attempt on Trump’s life in Pennsylvania, raising concerns over the security of political candidates ahead of the 2024 presidential election.

The trial is expected to draw national attention, not only because of the high-profile target but also due to the defendant’s erratic behavior, controversial past, and decision to represent himself in a complex federal case involving national security and political violence.
