KUALA LUMPUR: Sultan Ibrahim created history today by becoming the first Malaysian Head of State to attend Russia’s prestigious Victory Day celebrations in Moscow as an official guest of honour.

The special invitation was extended personally by Vladimir Putin, reflecting the strong diplomatic ties and growing bilateral relations between Malaysia and Russia.

According to a statement shared on the official Facebook page of Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, His Majesty joined President Putin and several world leaders at the iconic Red Square to witness the grand military parade commemorating the 81st anniversary of Victory Day.

Among the international leaders present were Aleksandr Lukashenko, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Thongloun Sisoulith and Robert Fico.

Victory Day is celebrated annually in Moscow to honour the Soviet Union’s victory during World War II from 1941 to 1945. The event is traditionally marked by a large-scale military parade featuring troops, military vehicles and ceremonial displays at Red Square.

The historic participation of Sultan Ibrahim is seen as a significant milestone for Malaysia’s international standing and diplomacy. It also highlights the important role of the Malaysian monarchy in strengthening global cooperation and fostering strategic international relationships for mutual benefit.

Observers say the royal visit underscores Malaysia’s growing recognition on the world stage and signals deeper engagement with major global powers through diplomatic and royal channels.
