KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is taking steps to reinforce its approach to managing refugees and asylum seekers as the issue grows increasingly complex, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said on Monday.

Chairing the first 2026 meeting of the Working Committee for the Security Cluster on the Management of Refugees and Asylum Seekers, Saifuddin highlighted the government’s commitment to reviewing and improving existing policies to ensure more effective and coordinated handling of the matter.

The meeting brought together key agencies under the Home Ministry, alongside representatives from the National Security Council, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Housing and Local Government, the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM), and the Syariah Judiciary Department.

Discussions focused on strengthening inter-agency coordination while ensuring that national security remains a top priority. At the same time, authorities aim to implement a more structured and efficient system for addressing refugee-related challenges.

A key initiative highlighted was the Refugee Registration Document (DPP) program, launched on January 1, 2026. The program is designed to provide more comprehensive and accurate data on refugees and asylum seekers in the country, enabling authorities to carry out monitoring and regulatory processes in a more systematic manner.

Saifuddin expressed confidence that ongoing improvements to the framework would enhance clarity, control, and overall effectiveness in managing the issue while balancing humanitarian considerations and national interests.

He added that the government would continue refining its approach to ensure that policies remain responsive to evolving challenges and deliver benefits for all stakeholders involved.
