KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 3: The Malaysian government has intensified diplomatic efforts to secure the safety and immediate release of 23 Malaysians detained by Israel following the interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) on October 2.

In a statement on Friday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Utama Haji Mohamad bin Haji Hasan have been in direct contact with international leaders, including counterparts in the United States, to seek urgent cooperation for the detainees’ release.

The ministry confirmed it has also instructed Malaysia’s embassies in Amman and Cairo to coordinate with ASEAN missions in Tel Aviv to strengthen diplomatic pressure.

“Information received indicates that all detainees are safe and in good health. They will be deported to third countries, after which Malaysia will ensure they receive full consular support for their safe return home,” the ministry said.

The government reaffirmed its position that the detention of the GSF participants was “unlawful,” stressing that those held must be treated in accordance with international law and released without delay.

Malaysia has consistently opposed Israel’s maritime blockade of Gaza and has supported international humanitarian efforts to deliver aid to the besieged territory.

“The Government of Malaysia will continue to safeguard the safety of Malaysians abroad and defend their rights under international law,” the statement added.
