Malaysia receives a Top Gun-themed US aircraft carrier

This morning, the USS Abraham Lincoln, recognized as one of the largest warships globally, made its arrival at Port Klang.

A US aircraft carrier has made its first visit to Malaysia since 2012.

The Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, serving as the flagship of the US Carrier Strike Group 3 (CSG 3), boasts an impressive length of 332.85 m, complemented by a flight deck that measures 76.8 m wide.

Over 5,000 sailors and marines operate the ship, supervising a fleet of 70 aircraft.

The aircraft carrier gained significant attention for its appearance in the popular film “Top Gun: Maverick,” featuring Tom Cruise.

Rear Admiral Adan Cruz, commander of CSG 3, expressed enthusiasm from his crew regarding the visit, viewing it as a chance to immerse themselves in Malaysian culture.

“Our sailors and marines are thrilled to be here, and many are eager to sample the local cuisine,” Cruz shared with reporters following their arrival from the carrier.

Cruz stated that the visit has two primary objectives: to restock the ship and to provide the crew with some time off after spending more than 100 days at sea, with their last stop being Guam.

In response to inquiries regarding the carrier’s recent operation in the Middle East, which played a role in mitigating escalating tensions between Israel and Iran, Cruz remarked that the mission was “successful and they accomplished all the objectives,” though he chose not to provide additional details.

Captain Pete Riebe, the ship’s commanding officer, expressed that the crew members are especially eager to sample Malaysia’s national dish, nasi lemak.

The crew has arranged several tours to notable landmarks and sites in Kuala Lumpur, such as Batu Caves, and will also engage in volunteer work within local communities.

“We will engage with schools, assist senior citizens in care facilities, and conduct prayers in various places of worship, including mosques, alongside the people of Malaysia,” he stated.
