Malaysia Immigration Crackdown on Passport Fraud: Two Officers Among Those Arrested

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 22: The Malaysian Immigration Department (JIM) has carried out a special operation targeting a syndicate involved in the misuse of the online passport application system, resulting in the arrest of two immigration officers and several other individuals.

The operation was conducted on January 19 and 21, 2026, at separate locations, coordinated by JIM’s Intelligence and Special Operations Division with assistance from the Johor and Sabah offices. The raids uncovered an online passport fraud scheme orchestrated by the syndicate.

During the operation, a local man was arrested in Simpang Renggam for allegedly providing fake certificates to obtain passports. Subsequently, two immigration officers were arrested in Kota Kinabalu, identified as the syndicate’s main conspirator and an accomplice. The ages of those arrested range from 32 to 40 years.

Datuk Zakaria Shaaban, Director-General of Immigration, stated that preliminary investigations revealed the syndicate provided online Malaysian International Passport (PMA) renewal services for Malaysians living abroad. Applicants submitted only their personal information and photographs, while the syndicate handled the entire process. Each passport reportedly cost RM12,000, and instead of being delivered directly to applicants, the passports were sent via couriers to agents overseas.

The authorities seized two PMA passports and related online application documents. The arrested individuals were taken to the Johor and Sabah immigration offices under the Passport Act 1966. Additionally, a local woman and another immigration officer were issued notices for aiding the syndicate.

The Malaysian Immigration Department emphasized that it will continue to take strict action against any activity violating domestic laws. Misuse of power by officials will also be firmly addressed to ensure the integrity of the immigration system and maintain public trust.
