LANGKAWI:  Malaysia is ramping up efforts to enhance its maritime security by investing in advanced surveillance technologies, including the deployment of autonomous unmanned vehicles (AUVs), Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin announced today.

Mohamed Khaled, speaking at the Malaysia Maritime Conference (MMC) held alongside the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2025 (LIMA’25), stated that the government is committed to safeguarding national maritime interests through strategic upgrades in technology, legal frameworks, and international cooperation.

“Malaysia will continue to strengthen its naval and maritime enforcement capabilities to protect national interests,” he stated. “We must also keep pace with the rapid advancement of sophisticated technologies that can significantly enhance our ability to respond to maritime challenges.”

The defense minister emphasized Malaysia’s focus on expanding intelligence-sharing mechanisms and increasing joint naval exercises with trusted international partners. These efforts aim to foster stronger regional cooperation and preparedness in addressing maritime threats.

Mohamed Khaled also highlighted the country’s commitment to reinforcing legal measures to combat illegal fishing, marine pollution, and the encroachment of foreign vessels. Strengthening enforcement mechanisms, he said, will promote accountability and deter unlawful activities in Malaysian waters.

“Economic prosperity cannot be sustained without robust maritime security,” he added. “Malaysia continues to face both traditional and emerging threats, including illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, piracy, smuggling, and environmental degradation.”

He further pointed to the impact of global supply chain disruptions, shifting geopolitical dynamics, and evolving security threats as key reasons behind Malaysia’s push for a more integrated and technologically advanced maritime defense strategy.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is also playing a growing role in the nation’s maritime approach, particularly in areas such as data analytics, threat detection, and undersea exploration.

Mohamed Khaled described the Malaysia Maritime Conference as a crucial platform for fostering dialogue, enhancing cooperation, and developing strategic policies aimed at positioning Malaysia as a leading maritime nation.
