Johor Polls: Fine Weather Accompanies Polling Day, Heavy Rain In Muar

8

JOHOR BAHRU: Fine weather accompanied the start of polling day for the 16th Johor State Election today in most areas across the state, except in Muar which experienced heavy rain since early morning.

A BERNAMA survey at several polling centres found Election Commission (EC) officers, security personnel and media practitioners already at the locations as early as 7 am.

At Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Seri Pantai in Mersing, the weather was fine with voters including persons with disabilities (PwDs) and senior citizens among the first to be allowed into the polling centre.

Similar weather conditions were observed at Dewan Raya Taman Ungku Tun Aminah in Johor Bahru, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Senggarang in Batu Pahat and Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina (SJKC) Kulai.

However, heavy rain since early morning did not stop voters from turning up at polling centres including SJKC Limbong and Sekolah Kebangsaan Ismail 1 to fulfil their responsibility as voters.

More than 2.7 million voters will choose their respective representatives today to fill the vacancies in 56 State Legislative Assembly seats contested by 172 candidates at 1,076 polling centres across Johor.

The voting process began at 8 am with different closing times according to polling centres set by the EC, before vote counting is conducted immediately after the polling period ends.

Prior to the dissolution of the State Legislative Assembly on June 1, Barisan Nasional (BN) controlled 40 seats, followed by Pakatan Harapan (12), Perikatan Nasional (three), while Parti Ikatan Demokratik Malaysia (MUDA) held one seat.
