Japan Extends Condolences on the Passing of Tun Dr Hasmah
KUALA LUMPUR: Japan has extended its condolences to former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his family following the passing of his wife, Tun Dr Hasmah Mohd Ali.
She passed away at the age of 100 at the National Heart Institute (IJN) here this morning.
“The Embassy of Japan extends its condolences to Dr Mahathir and his family members. Our thoughts and prayers are with them, and may she rest in peace,” Japanese Ambassador to Malaysia Shikata Noriyuki told Bernama.
The ambassador conveyed his condolences when met at the Malaysia-Japan Industrial & Innovation Expo (MJII) 2026 at UTM Kuala Lumpur here today.
Japanese Chamber of Trade and Industry Malaysia (JACTIM) President Hiromitsu Narukama, who was also present at the event, expressed his sympathies to Dr Mahathir and his family.
Narukama, who is also Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Mitsui & Co (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, said Dr Hasmah had supported Dr Mahathir and participated in international cooperation and dialogue.
Dr Mahathir, who served as Malaysia’s prime minister from 1981 to 2003 and again from 2018 to 2020, played an important role in strengthening Malaysia-Japan relations when he introduced the Look East Policy in 1982, drawing lessons from Japan’s experience to drive Malaysia’s industrialisation.
The policy, which has been a cornerstone of Malaysia-Japan relations, continues today as the Look East Policy 2.0.
