Infak Recycling Programme Enlivens Sustainable Culture Through Mosque Institutions

KAJANG: The Infak Recycling Programme at the Teras Jernang Mosque here is seen as capable of becoming a catalyst in efforts to enhance the recycling culture among the community through an approach that combines sustainability values and social responsibility.

KDEB Waste Management (KDEBWM) Subsidiary Management and Project Implementer General Manager, Dr Ahadi Mohd Nasir said the initiative of making mosques as collection centres for recyclable materials is a creative approach that can be expanded to more locations.

“We hope that efforts like this can be expanded to other mosques to enliven the recycling culture among the community.

“All this while, collection centres for recyclable materials have become a common thing, but when brought to mosques, it gives a new dimension because mosques are not only places of worship, but can also function as hubs that encourage sustainable practices,” he said.

He said this when met at the Infak Recycling Programme jointly organised by KDEBWM, the Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj), Trash4Cash and the Graduate School of Business of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) at the Teras Jernang Mosque, Bandar Baru Bangi, today.

Dr Ahadi said such a programme can also increase public awareness, given that the country’s recycling rate is currently at 38 per cent based on statistics from the National Solid Waste Management Department (JPSPN) and SWCorp.
