KUALA LUMPUR: The government is intensifying efforts to strengthen Malaysia’s gig economy ecosystem to ensure it remains sustainable, fair, and inclusive for workers, said Human Resources Minister R. Ramanan.

To advance this goal, the ministry recently held an engagement session with several gig platform providers, including Grab, Foodpanda, GoGet, ShopeeFood, Lalamove, Bolt, Halo Delivery, Kiddocare, and FastGig.

Ramanan said discussions focused on key issues such as social protection, workers’ welfare, and improving legal awareness among service platform providers.

“As I have stated previously, every issue and view raised during earlier engagement sessions with gig workers will be brought forward to subsequent discussions with other stakeholders, including worker representatives and relevant parties, to ensure that the approach taken is comprehensive and balanced,” he said in a Facebook post today.

He added that the MADANI Government remains committed to ensuring that the growth of the gig economy aligns with the nation’s human capital development agenda. At the same time, the government aims to strike a fair balance between protecting workers’ interests and sustaining the long-term viability of gig platforms.

The initiative reflects ongoing efforts to build a more resilient gig economy that supports shared prosperity while adapting to the evolving nature of work in the digital age.
