Newcastle, England, Sept 28 (VoM): Arsenal snatched a dramatic late victory at St James’ Park as defender Gabriel rose high to head home a stoppage-time winner, giving the Gunners a 2-1 triumph over Newcastle United in Sunday’s Premier League clash.

The win moves Arsenal up to second in the table with 13 points from six matches, cutting Liverpool’s lead at the top to just two points. Newcastle, meanwhile, remain struggling in 15th with only six points.

The hosts stunned Arsenal in the 34th minute when Nick Woltemade powered in a header from a short-corner routine. The chance came after Arsenal’s Cristhian Mosquera gifted Newcastle possession with a misdirected back-pass.

Despite dominating much of the second half, Arsenal wasted several opportunities in front of goal. Their persistence, however, paid off later on. In the 84th minute, midfielder Mikel Merino glanced a fine header past the Newcastle keeper to level the score.

With time running out, Arsenal piled on the pressure and was rewarded deep into stoppage time. Gabriel timed his run perfectly to meet a corner in the 96th minute, sending the travelling fans into raptures and sealing all three points for Mikel Arteta’s men.

The result keeps Arsenal firmly in the early title race, chasing leaders Liverpool. For Newcastle, however, the defeat compounds a difficult start to the season, leaving them with just one win in their last five outings.
