Extraordinary success in Mahkota by-election, stated Anwar

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim described Barisan Nasional’s (BN) victory in the Mahkota State Assembly By-Election (PRK) yesterday as an extraordinary success.

According to the Wilayahku portal, he stated that this significant win is proof that the community in the Mahkota constituency has confidence in the effectiveness of the unity government’s collaboration between the federal and state levels, led by Johor Chief Minister Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi.

“Congratulations to Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah and BN for this extraordinary success in retaining the Mahkota State Assembly seat.

“This is also a clear indication that the people continue to believe in the framework of policies and strategies of the government, which emphasizes economic issues and the overall living standards of the citizens,” he said on Facebook.

Syed Hussien, who is also the Information Chief of UMNO Youth Johor, received 27,995 votes, while Perikatan Nasional (PN) candidate Mohamad Haizan Jaafar garnered 7,357 votes.

Syed Hussien’s victory was announced by the Election Manager, Azurawati Wahid, at 9:05 PM last night, with a larger majority of 20,648 votes.

In the Johor State Election (PRN) 2022, the Mahkota constituency witnessed a four-cornered contest, where BN’s Datuk Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain won with 16,611 votes, while PH’s Taqiuddin Cheman received 11,445 votes, Mohamad Nor Lingan (PN) got 7,614 votes, and Mohamed Noor Suleiman (Warisan) had 555 votes.

The Mahkota by-election was held following the death of Sharifah Azizah, 63, on August 2.

According to statistics from the Election Commission (EC), there were 66,318 registered voters eligible to vote in the by-election, with the majority being 54 percent Malay, followed by 34 percent Chinese voters and 8 percent Indian voters.
