PONTIAN, Dec 14: The father-in-law of one of the victims killed in the deadly crane collapse at the Tanjung Bin Power Plant has revealed that he witnessed and recorded the tragic incident as it unfolded, moments before learning that his own son-in-law was among those who lost their lives.

According to Sinar Harian, Muhammad Hussin Zulkifli, 40, said he was on a ship at Tanjung Pelepas Port when he heard a loud explosion and saw thick smoke rising from the direction of Tanjung Bin.

“I was shocked when I heard the explosion and saw plumes of smoke coming from Tanjung Bin. I recorded the incident and sent the video to family members because my son-in-law works there,” he said.

One of the victims was Muhammad Amaluddin Hisamudin, 22, who died after a crane carrying coal collapsed at the Malakoff Power Plant on Jalan Tanjung Bin, Kukup, on Saturday (Dec 13). Another worker, Muhammad Alfarid Ahmad, 19, also lost his life in the incident.

Muhammad Hussin, a ship supervisor, said he was still struggling to come to terms with the tragedy. He received a call at about 2pm informing him that his son-in-law was among the victims, prompting him and his wife to rush immediately to Pontian Hospital.

“We had just met Amaluddin last week. He came to visit us with my daughter, Syahzanani Aizzati, and their three-year-old child at our home in Taman Nusa Perintis, Gelang Patah,” he said when met at the hospital’s forensic unit.

Describing Amaluddin as a quiet and gentle person, Muhammad Hussin added that his daughter often shared how much her husband enjoyed eating her home-cooked meals.

Amaluddin’s remains are expected to be laid to rest at the Gelang Patah Islamic Cemetery.

Meanwhile, Muhammad Faris, the elder brother of Muhammad Alfarid Ahmad, said a routine WhatsApp conversation on Friday night turned out to be their final exchange.

“We chatted as usual, and there was nothing out of the ordinary. I never imagined it would be our last conversation,” he said, adding that he last met his younger brother early last month.

Alfarid’s body will be transported to Tanah Merah, Kelantan, for burial after the post-mortem examination at Pontian Hospital is completed.

In the same incident, three other workers sustained serious injuries and are currently receiving treatment at Sultanah Aminah Hospital (HSA) in Johor Baru, as investigations into the cause of the crane collapse continue.
