SEREMBAN, Sept 5: Police have obtained a seven-day remand order against a couple in connection with the drowning of two young siblings whose car plunged into a river here earlier this week.
Port Dickson OCPD Supt. Maslan Udin confirmed that the 46-year-old man, father of the victims, and his 41-year-old female partner will be held until Sept 11 to assist investigations.
“We are also tracing the biological mother of the children,” he said, adding that police have yet to confirm whether the man is still legally married to her.
The victims, an eight-year-old girl and her six-year-old brother, drowned after the car they were resting in rolled into a river. Investigations revealed the vehicle had been parked by the riverbank with the couple and children inside. The man reportedly stepped out to smoke when the engine-off vehicle began moving towards the water.
Passers-by managed to rescue the woman, but the children were trapped and could not be saved.
Negri Sembilan police chief Datuk Alzafny Ahmad said the couple was arrested after inconsistencies were found in their statements. The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
A background check showed the male suspect has 16 prior cases and is wanted for four offenses, while the woman has no criminal record. Both tested negative for drugs.
Police also confirmed that the vehicle involved had been reported stolen.
