BERSATU Urges Government to Clarify Implementation of Najib Razak’s House Arrest

KUALA LUMPUR: The government should clarify the legal framework, procedures and criteria governing the implementation of house arrest following the conditional pardon granted to Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

BERSATU Secretary-General Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali said the clarification was important to ensure there was no perception that influential or privileged individuals were being given preferential treatment compared with ordinary citizens.

“The people have the right to be assured that a person’s position, influence or background does not result in a different standard of punishment from that applied to ordinary citizens.

“To ensure transparency in the implementation of the Pardons Board’s decision, BERSATU urges that all conditions imposed on Najib, including permission to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest, be clearly detailed and made public.

“These details are important to prevent public unease and anger that could undermine the integrity of the judiciary and public confidence in the country’s legal system,” he said in a statement today.

Azmin said BERSATU remained committed to its fight against kleptocracy, corruption and abuse of power, while stressing that punishments imposed must be fair and applied equally regardless of status or rank.

Without compromising its principles and position, BERSATU respects Article 42 of the Federal Constitution, which grants the Yang di-Pertuan Agong the power to grant pardons, reprieves and respites.

“The pardoning power of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong under Article 42 applies to all prisoners who are entitled to seek a pardon through the legal process,” he said.
