Ban on the use of plastic straws from August 1 in Kangar

KANGAR: All food and beverage shop premises including stalls and hawkers within the Kangar Municipal Council (MPK) area are prohibited from using plastic straws for customers, effective August 1.

According to Bernama, MPK Chairman Affendi Rajini Kanth said that as an alternative, traders or owners of the premises can use drinking straws made from biodegradable materials.

He said, the failure of traders to comply with the order could result in enforcement action being imposed on them.

“If he fails to comply with the instructions of the Council (under the Local Government Act 1976) he can be fined a maximum of RM500 or can be fined by the court if convicted which is not more than RM2,000,” he said in a statement today.
