KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Finance (MOF) will expedite the activation of automated teller machines (ATMs) in the Nenggiri State Assembly (DUN), Gua Musang, Kelantan, to meet the basic needs of the people in the area.

In a statement, the ministry noted that discussions with several local banks received positive responses.

“MOF acknowledges reports regarding the difficulties faced by residents of DUN Nenggiri in accessing ATMs, which require them to travel to Gua Musang, located 50 kilometers (km) away from their area.

“The activation of this ATM service will be expedited to meet the needs of local residents, and this effort will be expanded to ensure that all citizens can access this basic facility,” the ministry stated.

It was previously reported that over 30,000 residents in DUN Nenggiri require ATM facilities and petrol stations for their livelihood.

Surveys indicated that residents claimed they need to travel to the town of Gua Musang, more than 50 km away, and drive nearly 45 minutes to reach the nearest ATM.

Some even have to take a boat for 30 minutes, then a train for an hour just to access ATM services.

Meanwhile, in the same statement, MOF mentioned that it will also hold ongoing engagement sessions with local banks to identify improvements that can be made, especially in ensuring access to these services can be expanded.

It stated that members of the public facing similar difficulties in their areas can contact MOF via ukk@treasury.gov.my or call 03-8000 8000.
