KUALA LUMPUR, July 12 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced a special allocation of RM1 million to the Kuala Lumpur Football Association (KLFA) to support efforts in revitalising football in the nation’s capital.

Speaking at KLFA’s golden jubilee celebration today, Anwar emphasised that while financial aid is important, the true foundation of football development lies in strong infrastructure and early grassroots training.

“This is an opportunity for us to elevate the status of national football, but it has to start from the basics,” he said. Anwar called for greater collaboration between football associations and institutions such as the education ministry and sports training academies to build a more sustainable ecosystem.

“It’s not just about funding, but adequate infrastructure is crucial – proper fields, training facilities, and academies are needed to ensure our children are trained well and in comfort,” he stressed.

Anwar also used the occasion to remind both players and supporters of the importance of maintaining good sportsmanship. He voiced concern over certain groups of fans who had shown unruly behaviour, saying such conduct damages the spirit of unity and the image of the sport.

“There are groups of supporters that can sometimes get out of control… Losing does not mean the team should be ridiculed,” he said. To address this, Anwar has instructed the police to monitor and manage any behaviour that could harm the reputation of Malaysian football.

He also urged all football associations to take responsibility in promoting unity, mutual respect, and discipline among players and fans alike.

The RM1 million grant is seen as part of the government’s broader effort to uplift Malaysian football, with a particular focus on youth development and nurturing talent in a safe, well-equipped environment.
