KUALA LUMPUR, July 20 (Voice of Malaysia): Air quality across several parts of Peninsular Malaysia has dipped to concerning levels, with the Department of Environment (DOE) reporting unhealthy Air Pollutant Index (API) readings in multiple areas as of 11 a.m. Sunday.

Nilai, in Negeri Sembilan, recorded the highest API level at 160, placing it firmly within the “unhealthy” category. Close behind was Banting in Selangor, which logged an API of 153, also classified as unhealthy.

Other areas of concern include Putrajaya with a reading of 111, and Temerloh in Pahang at 104. Both readings fall under the “unhealthy for sensitive groups” category, meaning that individuals with respiratory conditions, senior citizens, and young children are advised to limit outdoor exposure.

In the Klang Valley and nearby regions, air quality remained moderate.

  • Kuala Lumpur recorded an API of 96,

  • Alor Gajah in Melaka came in at 94,

  • Port Dickson and Seremban, both in Negeri Sembilan, recorded 92 and 91 respectively.

  • Bukit Rambai and Bandaraya Melaka followed closely, at 89 and 88.

Over in East Malaysia, the air quality remained moderate as well.

  • In Sabah, Kota Kinabalu posted a reading of 59, and Keningau reported 58.

  • In Sarawak, Miri recorded 62, Bintulu 61, and Kuching 55.

The DOE categorizes API readings as follows:

  • 0–50: Good

  • 51–100: Moderate

  • 101–200: Unhealthy

  • 201–300: Very Unhealthy

  • Above 300: Hazardous

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and advise residents in high-API areas, particularly those in Nilai and Banting, to limit outdoor activities and wear masks if necessary. Individuals in sensitive groups are urged to remain indoors and take necessary precautions.
