KUCHING: Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has emphasized that the next leader to take on the role of Sarawak Premier must possess strong character, high integrity, and a genuine commitment to serving the people.

Speaking at the “Townhall Premier: Nine Years with YAB Premier Sarawak” event on Tuesday evening, Abang Johari noted that the selection of the state’s top leader is ultimately determined by the people, not by any individual or political party.

“The rakyat must see the potential in someone who can hold this position, because it is a very heavy responsibility. Whatever we do today will be accounted for in the future. This is my view… I provide free education because, in Islam, when we pass away, only our deeds in life will help us in the hereafter. Without you (the people), how could I become Premier?” he said, responding to a question about potential successors.

Reflecting on his more than four decades in politics, Abang Johari stressed that integrity is the most crucial element of leadership, as mistakes or abuse of power can have long-lasting impacts on the state’s future.

He said Sarawak requires a leader who understands the realities of a multicultural and multireligious society while maintaining harmony and peace during the state’s development.

Abang Johari also highlighted the importance of preparing young leaders, saying they must be trained and ready to shoulder the significant responsibilities of leadership rather than rushing to pursue the Premier’s post.

“Leaders must be trained. I am grateful to the leaders who trained me, including Tun Abdul Rahman Ya’kub and Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud. The time will come, I will say ‘bye-bye’… it is up to the next generation to develop Sarawak in new ways,” he added.
