Importance of Salah: The Foundation of Faith and the Key to Salvation

139

(VOM-Voice of Malaysia): In Islam, after the declaration of faith (Iman), the most important obligation upon every believing man and woman is the observance of the five daily prayers (Salah) at their prescribed times. In Arabic, the word “Salah” means prayer, but in Islamic terminology, it refers to the specific act of worship taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ that includes bowing, prostration, and supplication—performed as a means of remembering and connecting with Allah.

The Command of Allah and the Emphasis in the Qur’an and Hadith

Salah is the second pillar of Islam, right after the testimony of faith. It is a direct order from Allah, mentioned more than 80 times in the Qur’an. No other act of worship has been emphasized so frequently and intensely.

Allah says:

“Guard strictly the (five obligatory) prayers, especially the middle prayer. And stand before Allah with obedience.”
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:238)

Salah: An Uncompromisable Obligation

Islam allows for concessions in most acts of worship during hardship—fasting may be delayed, and zakat may be deferred—but not Salah. It is so essential that even if one is sick, injured, traveling, in battle, or under any circumstance, Salah must still be performed in whatever way possible—standing, sitting, lying down, or even with gestures. The believer must present themselves before Allah at the appointed time without fail.

Salah: Not a Burden, But a Blessing

Often we treat Salah as a duty, a task to complete. But in reality, Salah is a divine opportunity—a moment to speak with the Creator, seek His mercy, and find spiritual peace. It is the key to all success.

Allah says:

“Successful indeed are the believers—those who offer their prayers with humility and concentration.”
(Surah Al-Mu’minun 23:1-2)

And in another verse:

“Indeed, he succeeds who purifies himself, remembers the Name of his Lord, and prays.”
(Surah Al-A’la 87:14-15)

Salah Strengthens the Soul and Refines Character

The Qur’an describes humans as inherently restless and impatient—except for those who are consistent in their Salah. It is through prayer that a believer achieves emotional balance, mental strength, and moral discipline.

“Verily, man is created impatient. When evil touches him, he is panicked, and when good reaches him, he becomes withholding—except those devoted to prayer.”
(Surah Al-Ma’arij 70:19-22)

Salah as a Cleanser of Sins

The Prophet ﷺ likened Salah to a river in which one bathes five times a day. Just as frequent bathing removes physical dirt, Salah cleanses spiritual impurities.

“If there was a river at the door of one of you, and he bathed in it five times a day, would any dirt remain on him?” The companions replied, “No, nothing would remain.” The Prophet ﷺ said, “That is the example of the five prayers. Allah wipes away sins through them.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari & Muslim)

Salah: The Line Between Belief and Disbelief

The most distinguishing act between a believer and a non-believer is Salah. Abandoning it intentionally is considered by many scholars and companions of the Prophet ﷺ as an act of disbelief (kufr).

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Between a man and shirk (associating partners with Allah) and kufr is the abandonment of Salah.”
(Sahih Muslim)

And also:

“Whoever abandons prayer has disbelieved.”
(Tirmidhi)

Congregational Prayer (Salah in Jama’ah): A Strong Emphasis

For men, performing Salah in congregation (jama’ah) in the mosque is highly emphasized. According to the Hanafi school, it is wajib (obligatory), and in other schools, it is even considered fard (compulsory). Failing to attend congregational prayers without a valid excuse is a grave sin.

The Prophet ﷺ warned:

“Whoever hears the call to prayer and does not attend (the congregation), there is no prayer for him except with a valid excuse.”
(Ibn Majah)

The Prophet ﷺ also said:

“Prayer in congregation is twenty-seven times more rewarding than praying alone.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari & Muslim)

The Weight of Missing a Single Prayer

Missing even one obligatory prayer without a valid excuse is considered a major sin, more severe than drinking alcohol or consuming pork. Some scholars go so far as to say that such a person steps outside the fold of Islam if they believe Salah is not necessary.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Do not ever deliberately miss an obligatory prayer, for whoever does so is no longer under Allah’s protection.”
(Ahmad)

The Virtue of Nawafil (Voluntary Prayers)

Alongside the five daily obligatory prayers, Islam greatly encourages voluntary (nafl) prayers. These prayers earn immense reward and help compensate for any shortcomings in obligatory prayers.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“My servant does not draw near to Me with anything more beloved than what I have made obligatory upon him. Then he continues to draw near to Me through voluntary acts until I love him.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari)

Among the most notable voluntary prayers are

  • Tahajjud (night prayer): A means to attain closeness to Allah.

  • Duha (mid-morning prayer): Brings the reward of Hajj and Umrah.

  • Tahiyyatul Wudu & Tahiyyatul Masjid: After ablution and upon entering the mosque.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“You should perform lots of prostrations to Allah. For every prostration you perform, Allah will raise your rank and remove a sin.”
(Sahih Muslim)

Conclusion

Salah is the soul of Islamic worship. It is the measure of one’s faith, the source of forgiveness, and the gateway to peace in this world and salvation in the Hereafter. Whether obligatory or voluntary, every prayer draws the believer closer to Allah and transforms his character.

Let us treat Salah not as a burden but as a daily divine meeting with our Creator. May Allah grant us steadfastness in our prayers and make us among those who establish Salah with khushu’ (humility and devotion). Ameen.
