French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Friday a historic deal between Airbus and Malaysia during a visit by Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to Paris.

Speaking at a joint statement before a working dinner at the Élysée Palace, Macron emphasized the importance of strong trade ties between France and Asia, particularly as Europe braces for possible tariffs from the United States.

“I am thinking of the projects signed in key sectors such as minerals, rare earths with the company Carester, which recently opened a factory in the Lacq region, the transport sector with this historic cooperation between Malaysia Airlines and Airbus, and the energy transition sector,” said Macron.

Sources revealed that Airbus is close to finalizing an order from Malaysia Aviation Group for 20 A330neo long-haul jets. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim confirmed the deal, adding that AirAsia plans to acquire another 50 Airbus aircraft.

“Airbus has been our focus. Malaysia Airlines 20, and AirAsia another 50,” said Anwar.

The agreement is seen as a major boost for Malaysia’s aviation industry and highlights the expanding economic cooperation between France and Malaysia amid shifting global trade dynamics.
