Malaysia faces a growing issue in its automotive sector, with analysts warning that the country could turn into a “graveyard of used cars” if the problem of vehicle dumping remains unresolved. The sharp decline in used car prices has raised concerns among industry experts and policymakers.

Samsuri noted that Malaysia could learn from developed countries, where new cars are affordable but offset by high insurance costs and mandatory inspections. These factors often compel owners to dispose of vehicles responsibly.

Call for Government Action

Samsuri urged the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) and the Ministry of Transportation (MOT) to devise an action plan to address the issue. Suggestions include creating an “exit pathway” for old vehicles and improving data collection to support automotive industry policies.

“Comprehensive data is crucial for formulating future plans,” he explained.

“We often overlook the importance of systematic data collection in addressing long-term issues.”

Environmental and Economic Impact

Samsuri emphasized that addressing this issue could help Malaysia reduce carbon emissions and promote a sustainable automotive industry. He highlighted that failure to act would not only harm the industry but also have broader economic consequences.

“Malaysia needs courage to implement the EOL program,” he said, adding that proactive measures are essential for ensuring the industry’s sustainable growth.

Authorities are expected to prioritize this matter, as the automotive sector remains a key contributor to Malaysia’s economy.
