On Sunday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva of Brazil are going to meet here.

Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, will meet with people from the Malaysian and Brazilian chip industries. On the second day of his trip, he will also participate in a panel discussion with Brazil’s business leaders.

The floating, production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) unit Maria Quitéria, owned by Malaysia’s Yinson Holdings Bhd, produced its first oil on October 15, 2024. The Prime Minister will also be present at the celebration of its first oil production.

With this milestone, the project’s firm charter began. The group’s unit, Yinson Production, will receive scheduled day rates for the next 22.5 years, until 2047.

Yinson Production has produced two assets for its client Petrobras. The first was the FPSO’s Anna Nery in May 2023. The second is FPSO Maria Quitéria. The FPSO Maria Quitéria has the capacity to store one million barrels of oil. It can produce 100,000 barrels of oil per day (bpd).

The day will conclude with dinner with friends from Malaysia and Malaysians residing abroad.

Anwar came to this lively seaside city on Saturday after going to Lima, Peru, for the APEC Economic Leaders Week (AELW). This was his first official visit to Brazil, and the country was a guest of the G20.

The G20 Summit has 16 partner countries, such as Chile, Qatar, Egypt, Singapore, Spain, the United Arab Emirates, and Vietnam. Malaysia is one of them. The president of Brazil, Lula da Silva, asked Anwar to come to the country.

The Foreign Minister, Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, and the Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry, Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Aziz, are with the Prime Minister.

There are also top Malaysian government officials in the group, such as Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii, who is the Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, and Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir, who is the Deputy Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation.

Brazil is the biggest country in South America. In 2023, it was Malaysia’s 20th biggest trade partner, 29th biggest export market, and 17th biggest import market.

Brazil is Malaysia’s second-biggest trade partner in Latin America and the Caribbean. It is also its second-biggest export market and largest import source.
