An employee of a cosmetics store lost almost RM4,000 last Thursday after being duped by an unidentified woman into giving up her jewelry in an incident in Jaya Gading.

The incident happened to an 18-year-old female who was at work at around 4 p.m., according to Assistant Commissioner Wan Mohd Zahari Wan Busu, the chief of police for Kuantan District.

The victim, who had only been employed for two weeks, allegedly said that a suspect posing as a customer had approached him.

“The suspect spoke with the victim about the jewelry she was wearing and inquired about the cosmetics being sold.

“The victim claimed to have handed over the gold bracelet, necklace, and ring she was wearing to the suspect without realizing it,” stated the officer.

According to Wan Mohd Zahari, the victim didn’t know her jewelry was gone until the culprit had left the store.

“The victim also discovered that the jewelry’s purchase receipt was missing from storage.

“The initial investigation found that the victim did not know the suspect, and the woman had never been to the store before,” he stated.

According to Wan Mohd Zahari, the victim reported the crime to the police the next day.

“The case is being investigated according to Section 420 of the Penal Code,” he stated.

He added that the police are actively pursuing the suspect, who is thought to be in his 40s, in order to conduct additional investigation.

“People who know the woman are asked to come forward with information to help the investigation,” he said.

A video of the incident lasting one minute and 21 seconds also went viral on social media, showing the suspect entering a cosmetic shop and approaching the employee before taking the victim’s jewelry.
