KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stated that Datuk Seri Dr. Maimunah Mohd Sharif, who will officially begin her duties as the Mayor of Kuala Lumpur tomorrow, is qualified to carry the trust of leading the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL).
He believes that Maimunah’s nearly four decades of experience in urban planning and community development while leading various institutions both domestically and internationally can be applied in her new role.
Anwar mentioned that he handed over the appointment letter to Maimunah today, who will commence her duties as the new Mayor of Kuala Lumpur starting tomorrow.
He noted that Maimunah’s appointment has received the consent of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim in accordance with Subsection 4(2) of the Federal Capital Act 1960.
“Her experience as the Mayor of the Penang Island City Council and the President of the Seberang Perai Municipal Council, as well as her previous role as President of the Malaysian Local Authorities Association (MALA), adds to her credentials.
“More impressively, she was also appointed as the Executive Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) based in Nairobi, Kenya, making her the only Asian woman to hold this position,” he said in a post on his Facebook.
Anwar hopes that Maimunah’s vast experience will be used to improve the quality of life for the people of Kuala Lumpur and elevate the image, reputation, and dignity of the city to a higher level.
