Man held for seven days after allegedly assaulting wife and pushing her into ravine
GERIK: A man accused of assaulting, strangling, and pushing his wife into a ravine on the East-West Highway (JRTB) at KM31.2 between Gerik and Jeli on July 27 has been remanded for seven days, according to Malay daily Sinar Harian.
Magistrate Savinder Singh granted the remand order until next Monday (August 12) for the 39-year-old suspect, who is a trader. The remand is to allow police to continue their investigation under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder.
The suspect appeared at the Gerik Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday (August 6), wearing a long-sleeved T-shirt and accompanied by police officers at 8:50 am, as reported by Sinar Harian.
Previously, the suspect had been detained at the Baling district police headquarters in Kedah on July 31 and remanded for six days for investigation under Section 324 of the Penal Code for allegedly injuring his older brother.
After his previous remand ended, the suspect was re-arrested by the Gerik police. Reports indicate that the arrest followed an alleged incident where the suspect assaulted, strangled, and pushed his wife into a ravine following a verbal dispute.
The 32-year-old victim fell into a 10-meter-deep ravine but managed to climb back to the roadside and was discovered by passersby around 2 pm. She sustained injuries to her waist and is receiving treatment at Taiping Hospital.
