KUALA LUMPUR: Barisan Nasional (BN) will represent the unity government to compete in the Nenggiri state by-election on August 17.

Unity Government Secretariat Head Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the decision was reached at a meeting on July 9, which was chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and was also attended by the top leadership of Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Harapan.

“The leaders of both parties gave full commitment and support to help the BN candidate representing the unity government,” he said in a statement.

The media previously reported that the Election Commission (SPR) set the voting day for the Nenggiri state by-election to be August 17.

The chairman of the EC, Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun, was quoted as saying that the dates for the nomination of candidates and early voters were set for August 3 and 13 respectively.

Prior to that, the EC received an official notification from the Speaker of the Kelantan State Legislative Assembly, Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah, regarding the unexpected vacancy of the Nenggiri state assembly seat due to the incumbent, Mohd Azizi Abu Naim, losing his membership of Bersatu on June 13.
