Zambry led the BN machinery in the Sungai Bakap by-election

KUALA LUMPUR: UMNO named a member of the Supreme Working Council, Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir as the Barisan Nasional (BN) election director for the Sungai Bakap state assembly by-election.

Secretary General, Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, said the matter was decided in the UMNO Supreme Council Meeting (MT), chaired by its President Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi at Menara Dato Onn, last night.

He said, the party also named Datuk Musa Sheikh Fadzir (Head of Penang UMNO Communications) as Director of Operations and Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan (MT UMNO) as Head of Sungai Vakap PRK War Room.

On 12 June, the former Director of the Aminudin Baki North Branch Institute, Dr Joohari Ariffin was announced as the candidate for the Unity Government who will compete in the Sungai Bakap state assembly by-election.

The Election Commission (SPR) set July 6 as voting day for the Sungai Bakap by-election and June 22 as candidate nomination day, while early voting on July 2.

The Sungai Bakap by-election was held following the death of incumbent Nor Zamri Mohd Nor on 24 May.

In the last State Election, Nor Zamri who is PAS President Nibong Tebal defeated PH candidate Nurhidayah Che Ros, with a majority of 1,563 votes.

In addition, Asyraf informed the meeting that it had also been agreed that the UMNO General Assembly would be held from 21 to 24 August 2024.

In other developments, he said the UMNO MT meeting also discussed UMNO’s responsibility to help the government implement the country’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Policy.

Asyraf said the effort was to ensure that the more than 250,000 TVET study places provided in 1,345 TVET institutions across the country were fully utilized and filled.

“UMNO expresses its appreciation to the Government for responding to UMNO’s proposal to establish the GIG Economic Commission.

“UMNO will continue to play a role through leadership in the administration, to ensure that 1.16 million gig workers are protected and trained through various TVET programs for upgrading and reskilling, through the National TVET Council which is also spearheaded and chaired by the President of UMNO,” he said.
