Selangor Bersatu to Declare Support for State Government?

SHAH ALAM: Selangor state assemblymen from Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) are expected to meet with the state government in the near future to sign a cooperation agreement.

A source within the party told Utusan Malaysia that the cooperation would involve all 11 assemblymen from the party, who would subsequently be regarded as supporters of the state government.

“Therefore, a meeting is expected to be held at Wisma Dewan Negeri, which will also involve state government agencies,” the source said when met.

Meanwhile, another source said the move would not alter the structure of the state government or the existing lineup of state executive councillors. The Bersatu assemblymen would remain in the opposition but support the state government’s policies and programmes.

“However, the objective is to resolve problems faced by the people. Bersatu assemblymen will remain in the opposition, with Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali (Bersatu-Hulu Klang) continuing as their leader.

“They will, however, be accorded the same rights as government assemblymen. That is among Bersatu’s requests. Everything is being done in the interests of the people,” the source explained.

The source, however, stressed that the support or cooperation did not mean that the party would join the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition.

Utusan Malaysia reported last month that Bersatu was seeking a new political direction and alignment, including the possibility of cooperating with Pakatan Harapan (PH), after finding itself sidelined within Perikatan Nasional (PN).

According to a source within Bersatu’s leadership, the move was said to have received the “blessing” of the party’s top leadership, while the proposed political alignment was also known to party president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

The source said negotiations began in Selangor, which would become the first state to implement such cooperation.

Meanwhile, Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari declined to comment on any political developments when approached.

Apart from Bersatu, the Selangor opposition currently comprises 10 assemblymen from PAS, which contested alongside Bersatu under Perikatan Nasional (PN) in the 2023 Selangor state election.

However, in March 2024, one of the 22 opposition assemblymen, Datuk Abdul Rashid Asari (Selat Klang), declared his support for the Menteri Besar. He was subsequently removed as Selangor Bersatu chairman and replaced by Mohamed Azmin.
