Condolences Continue to Pour In for the Late Tun Dr Siti Hasmah
KUALA LUMPUR: Condolences from foreign leaders continue to pour in following the passing of Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali, with tributes honouring her lifelong contributions to medicine, public health and community welfare.
Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari expressed deep sorrow over her passing and extended his condolences to former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, her family and the people of Malaysia.
“Dr Siti Hasmah’s long and distinguished service in medicine, public health and community welfare will always be remembered with great respect,” Zardari said, according to Pakistan’s Press Information Department (PID).
Meanwhile, Maldives President Dr Mohamed Muizzu also expressed profound sadness and paid tribute to Dr Siti Hasmah as one of Malaysia’s earliest women doctors, highlighting her contributions to maternal healthcare and the development of rural women.
He said her leadership in gender equality and family welfare reflected her lifelong commitment to serving society and empowering future generations.
Muizzu extended his condolences to Dr Mahathir and his family on behalf of the government and people of the Maldives.
Meanwhile, Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen described Dr Siti Hasmah as a respected doctor, public health advocate and pioneer who dedicated her life to serving the Malaysian people.
“At this time of profound sorrow, on behalf of the Senate of Cambodia and myself, I would like to express my deepest sympathies and condolences to you, your family, the government and the people of Malaysia,” Hun Sen, who is also Cambodia’s Acting Head of State, said in a Facebook post.
The former Cambodian Prime Minister also recalled Dr Siti Hasmah’s advocacy for maternal health, literacy, drug abuse prevention and mental health, as well as her role in the modernisation of Malaysia’s healthcare services.
“She and her legacy will continue to be remembered for generations to come,” he said.
Dr Siti Hasmah was laid to rest at 6.20pm yesterday at Pusara Negara, Precinct 20, Putrajaya.
Her husband, Dr Mahathir, their children and other family members were also present.
A state funeral ceremony was held to pay final respects to the wife of the former Prime Minister, who passed away at the National Heart Institute (IJN) at 9.20am on Monday at the age of 100.
