Najib Could Leave Prison, ‘Stay’ at Langgak Duta After RM50 Million Fine Is Paid – Lawyer

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak could be allowed to leave Kajang Prison on the same day if his application for a stay of sentence in the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) case is granted and the RM50 million fine is paid, according to his lawyer, Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah.

However, Muhammad Shafee said the matter would still be subject to the implementation process and any legal issues that may arise.

He said that if both conditions are met, there is a possibility that Najib could serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest.

“If the stay is granted and the RM50 million fine is paid, I think in principle he could leave on the same day, but it would be subject to the implementation process and any legal issues that may arise,” he told a press conference at the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex here on Friday.

Asked whether a residence had been finalised as the location for the house arrest, Muhammad Shafee said Najib’s residence in Langgak Duta had so far been identified as the location for the arrangement.

He said the residence would be easier to secure as it has a guarded gate and only one exit.

“No. 11 (Langgak Duta) has a guarded gate and only one exit, so in terms of security and monitoring, it is easier,” he explained.

However, he could not confirm whether Najib would ultimately be placed at the residence, as the final implementation of the house arrest remains subject to the relevant official instructions and documentation.

In the same development, Muhammad Shafee said his team had yet to receive the official letter regarding the conditional pardon decision allowing Najib to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest.
