Prisons Department Awaits Official Letter on Najib’s House Arrest
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Prisons Department is still awaiting official written notification regarding the conditional pardon granted to former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak before any further action can be determined to implement the decision.
The Malaysian Prisons Department said in a statement that it and the Home Ministry (KDN) were still awaiting official notification regarding the decision.
“In line with the statement by Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail on Sept 19, 2026, the Home Ministry and the Malaysian Prisons Department are still awaiting official written notification regarding the decision before any further action can be determined to implement it,” the department said in a statement on Sunday.
On Friday, the media reported that Najib had been granted a conditional pardon by Sultan Ibrahim, Yang di-Pertuan Agong, allowing him to serve the remainder of his prison sentence under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028.
The decision was made at the 64th meeting of the Pardons Board for the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya, held on Friday.
According to the Legal Affairs Division (BHEUU) of the Prime Minister’s Department, the conditional pardon is subject to Najib paying a RM50 million fine.
The same statement said that based on information from BHEUU, Sultan Ibrahim, Yang di-Pertuan Agong, had granted Najib a conditional pardon.
The decision allows him to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028, subject to stipulated conditions, including the payment of the RM50 million fine.
The Prisons Department also explained that any official notification and documents relating to the Pardons Board’s decision would be conveyed through the appropriate official channels before being submitted to the department for further action.
“The Malaysian Prisons Department is always prepared to implement any official directive received from the relevant authorities in accordance with the law, prison regulations, as well as the procedures currently in force.
“The department will implement any decision and directive received in an orderly, professional and transparent manner, in accordance with the law and the decisions of the relevant authorities,” it said.
The department therefore urged all parties to refer to official sources and refrain from speculating about the implementation of the decision.
